Number Row Typing Test

The number row test trains the digits that sit above the letter keys, including the symbols you reach with Shift. Type the sequences shown on screen and track your speed in characters per minute alongside accuracy, errors and consistency. It is free, needs no sign-up, and records your personal best in this browser only.

The Number Row Is a Different Skill From the Keypad

Typing digits on the top row means every finger leaves its home position. The index fingers reach up for the inner digits, the middle and ring fingers cover the middle of the row, and the little fingers stretch for the outer numbers, so the movement is larger and slower than grid entry on a keypad.

That reach is exactly what makes practice worthwhile. Most casual typists hunt for these keys, and the habit shows up whenever a password, reference number or measurement appears mid-sentence. Repeated drills turn the row into a known distance rather than a guess, and the test measures that progress in characters per minute.

Characters Per Minute Explained

Characters per minute counts the correct characters you typed divided by the minutes you spent typing. Digits, spaces and symbols all count as characters, so the figure reflects the whole sequence rather than a word estimate. Because numeric sequences have no convenient word boundaries, CPM is a fairer measure than words per minute for this material.

The result screen also shows a words per minute figure for reference, clearly labelled with the five-character word convention, but it is secondary. Accuracy, error count and consistency appear next to the primary score so you can see whether a faster attempt stayed as clean as a slower one.

Practising Digits and Shifted Symbols Together

The number row carries two characters on every key: the digit and the symbol above it. Reaching the symbol adds a Shift hold from the opposite hand, which turns a single keystroke into a small coordination exercise. That extra step is where most mistakes happen, especially with the less familiar symbols.

The test mixes plain digits with the shifted characters from that row, so both paths get attention in the same session. When errors cluster on the symbols, slow down and pair each one deliberately: hold Shift first, press the key, release both. The sequence becomes automatic faster than trying to speed through it.

Reading Your Result

After each attempt you get your characters per minute, accuracy, error count, consistency and the characters you missed most often. Consistency measures how even your pace was across the attempt, which is useful when two runs show a similar speed but one was clearly steadier.

Use the most-missed list to decide what the next run should target. If the outer digits keep slipping, dedicate an attempt to them at a comfortable pace. Improving a weak key raises both your clean speed and your confidence in longer sequences where those digits appear frequently.

Flexible Practice on Any Keyboard

The test opens straight in the browser with no install and no account. Durations are short enough for a quick session between tasks, and changing the length never reloads the page or resets your place in the site.

Sound feedback is available but off by default, and the layout adapts to smaller screens so you can practise on a phone when no full keyboard is nearby. Personal bests live in local storage on the device you use, and the reset control clears them whenever you want to measure fresh progress.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the number row typing test measure?

It measures how accurately you type the digits above the letter keys and their Shift symbols. The primary score is characters per minute, shown with accuracy, errors and consistency.

How is CPM different from WPM?

CPM counts every correct character, including digits, spaces and symbols. WPM groups characters into five-character words. Numeric sequences have no word boundaries, so CPM describes them more directly.

Why are the symbols on the number row so hard?

Each symbol needs a Shift hold from the opposite hand while the reaching finger stays on the key. That coordination is rarely practised, so deliberate slow repetition builds the habit fastest.

Should I practise digits without Shift first?

Yes, if plain digits still feel uncertain. Build confidence with the digits alone, then add the shifted symbols once your reach for each key is consistent and accurate.

Does this test work on a phone?

The layout adapts to smaller screens with larger touch targets, so you can practise there. A physical keyboard gives a truer measure of everyday typing speed.

Where are my number row results stored?

In local storage on the device you are using. The results never leave your browser, and the reset control on the tool deletes them whenever you want a clean start.
