Keyboard Finger Placement

Consistent finger placement helps reduce unnecessary hand movement and gives each finger a familiar area of the keyboard to manage.

Use the Home Row as Your Starting Position

The main resting position places the left hand around A, S, D and F and the right hand around J, K, L and the semicolon key. The raised markers on F and J can help you find this position by touch.

Reach and Return

When a finger moves to another row, it should return toward its familiar resting position. This helps keep the hands organised while the fingers reach different keys.

Practise Small Groups of Keys

Learning finger placement is easier when only a few new keys are introduced at a time. The typing lessons on this site follow this gradual approach.
